"Relationships" – David & Jonathan

Garb: robe, spear from Saul, crown from Saul

1. Tell this story from the first person as Jonathan. Explain that he was to be king after his father, Saul. Explain the importance of his friendship w/ David. Be dramatic as you tell of the story of Saul, David’s harp, and Saul’s attempt to murder David. I Sam. 19:1-10

  2. Focus on the oath that Jonathan took before David to be his friend. Pay close attention to v. 17 which states that Jonathan loved David as himself. I Sam. 20:12-23

bow & arrow, servant boy in period garb 3. Wrap this up with the story of the bow and arrow, and Jonathan's servant boy. Use one of the older children to act out the part of the servant boy. Act out the bow and arrow part, if possible. Point out that Jonathan chose to be a loyal friend to David. He understood that God had chosen David as the next kind of Israel, and he gave up this kingship for his friend's sake. I Sam. 20:34-42
